Venezuela eradicates illiteracy

Found an interesting titbit in my UCU magazine today, mentioning in passing that "UNESCO has confirmed that Venezuela has now eradicated illiteracy". Wow!

Some brief internet searching seems to confirm this. According to UNESCO, Latin America generally has illiteracy rates of about 10%. Of course you're never going to get a country where absolutely every individual is literate, but Venezuela's radical programmes have demonstrably reduced illiteracy to about 2%, which is about the same as the average estimate for developed countries. This UNESCO graph shows literacy in Latin America, with Venezuela at about 7%, but that's for 2000-2004.
